I teach my clients to try to work at least 70% in their “Unique Brilliance”- that intersection of what they love to do and are excellent at doing. (And then hire people whose Unique Brilliance is in the areas that drain them, that they dislike or they just aren’t good at doing).
Do you wonder why I don’t recommend 100% of work in your “Unique Brilliance”?
Let me ask you this: How much do you like marketing?
If you answer, not much, then you are like most entrepreneurs. And the thing is…as much as you might want to…. you can’t delegate all your marketing if you want to grow your business.
And that’s because YOU started your business and it’s YOUR baby. It’s a reflection of something you care deeply about- whether it’s because you are helping people in a meaningful way, or you are bringing in an income for your family, or you are giving back in bigger ways with your abundance… or a host of other reasons.
So in order to keep the ship sailing in the direction that you want, you need some involvement with marketing.
But don’t worry, there are ways to make it much more palatable if you are not a marketing fan. Here are a few tips:
- Be sure to flesh out your competitive advantages in your own words and use that in your marketing. How do you stand out from the crowd? Why should people hire you over the competition? Dig deep and be authentic.
- Show good-fit clients how you solve their problems or reduce their pain. If you have a conversation with prospects, follow a template that connects with them, pulls out their problems or pain, shows them how your services will help them reduce their pain, and overcomes their objections. This might be delegated to a sales team or a front desk person, but you need to create or oversee the template to be followed.
- Make sure someone is testing and tracking your marketing. You don’t need to do this yourself. This is one of those things that is perfectly okay to delegate to a team member but they need to do it regularly and show you the results. Ditch what doesn’t work and increase what does.
